The beach life is closer than you think! Virginia Beach is well within a day’s drive of most American cities. Finding your way to our three distinctive beaches is a breeze.
Welcome to the one step guide to visiting one of Virginia’s most popular coastal city!
Norfolk International Airport is 20 minutes from the oceanfront and is serviced by most major U.S. carriers.
AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION & PARKING
If you choose to arrive at the Norfolk International Airport you may then get rel="noopener noreferrer" to Virginia Beach by the airport shuttle. The price of a one-way shuttle trip to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront is approximately $45.00.
OTHER AIRPORTS NEARBY
If Norfolk International Airport is not available, there are other rel="noopener noreferrer" alternatives to getting to Virginia Beach:
Newport News/ Williamsburg International Airport, (757) 877-0221, also services the area. Airport Express provides ground transportation from the airport to your hotel, (757) 857-5950. Three companies – AirTran, rel="noopener noreferrer" Delta, and US Airways – make flights to a smaller local airport in Newport News/Williamsburg. The airport has car rentals in it, and is served by taxi, but has no direct public transportation to Virginia Beach. Dependent upon the traffic, it may take you from 45 min to an hour to drive from the airport to the Virginia Beach oceanfront.
Drive By Car
All roads lead to Virginia Beach. When traveling from routes northwest of the Hampton Roads region, motorists are encouraged to use a faster, alternate route via I-664 Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel (MMMBT), off of I-64 East, to make getting here a breeze. While the mileage to reach the beach could be greater, I-664 tends to be less congested and the time spent idling in traffic is statistically reduced. Simply take I-64 East, to I-664 (Exit # 264), to I-264 (Exit # 15 A), which will lead to the oceanfront. When leaving to return home, take I-264 West to I-664 North (Exit #299) to I-64 West (Exit #1 A).
When approaching from the west, other routes are Interstate 64, U.S. 460 or U.S. 58. From the north and south, convenient routes include Interstates 85 or 95, U.S. 17 and U.S. 13, crossing the world-famous Chesapeake Bay-Bridge Tunnel, a 17-mile span connecting Virginia’s Eastern Shore with Virginia Beach (please note that this route requires tolls). These routes intersect with Interstate 64, which connects with the Virginia Beach-Norfolk Expressway, Interstate 264, and leads directly to the Virginia Beach rel="noopener noreferrer" oceanfront.
Amtrak service available to Virginia Beach, www.amtrak.com, 800.872.7245.
Bus rel="noopener noreferrer" service is provided by Greyhound. For schedule and stop information please visitwww.greyhound.com, or call toll free at (800) 231-2222.
Water is never far away in Virginia Beach. The city contains 51.3 square miles of water, which takes form in the dozens of rivers, bays, lakes, marsh areas and fingers of water that flow into the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay. Linking the Chesapeake Bay and James River estuaries is the Hampton Roads harbor, one of the finest natural harbors and home port to the world’s largest naval base. Here, the Intracoastal Waterway begins at mile marker 1. From Virginia Beach, recreational boaters can travel as far north as Boston and south to Brownsville, Texas.
Navigators along the East Coast can reach Virginia Beach by plotting a course on the Intracoastal Waterway or Atlantic Ocean. For more information about local marinas and slip fees, call 1-800-VA BEACH.
